Kelcie McQuaidAbout the judge, Kelcie McQuaid

Kelcie McQuaid is a distinguished multidisciplinary artist and curator with deep roots in South Florida, where her influence in the art scene is both significant and far-reaching. As the founder of ShangriLa Collective, McQuaid has been instrumental in connecting emerging and mid-career artists, guiding them to explore the complexities of human experience through dynamic multimedia exhibitions. Her own artistic practice is known for pushing the boundaries of emotion and creativity, blending bold, illustrative portraits with vibrant abstract forms.

Early in her career, McQuaid gained recognition for her iconic murals and participation in over 80 group exhibitions. Her solo debut, “Universe Expanding” featured over 100 paintings and earned her the title of ‘Best Emerging Artist 2015’ from Broward Palm Beach New Times. A champion of South Florida’s burgeoning art districts, including Mass District and Fat Village, McQuaid has collaborated with prominent cultural institutions such as the Broward County Cultural Division, Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, and Coral Springs Museum of Art, among others. Through her work, she has

facilitated hundreds of art events, educational workshops, and exhibitions, playing a vital role in launching and sustaining the careers of many artists. One of McQuaid’s notable projects includes curating and managing the “Open Canvas Project,” a large-scale public art initiative in Fort Lauderdale that engaged over 500 artists and community members, earning the Best Non-Profit Collaboration of the Year award in 2018. She also revitalized the local impact of Jerry’s Artarama as their Marketing + Outreach Coordinator, where she launched educational programs and development initiatives for local art institutions.

As a Museum Educator at the Coral Springs Museum of Art for over six years, McQuaid has taught a wide array of art techniques and helped facilitate the museum’s annual ‘Empty Walls’ fundraiser. Additionally, she has been a consultant for Pompano Beach Arts and Bailey Contemporary Arts’ Artist in Residence program, supporting artists in forging new connections and advancing their professional careers. McQuaid’s paintings reflect her exploration of feminine energy, vulnerability, and strength. Her work delves into the evolving nature of relationships and perspectives, using layers of paint, ink, and mixed media to symbolize her personal growth and empowerment.

McQuaid was awarded a prestigious Artist Support Grant from the Broward County Cultural Division for 2024 to bring her solo exhibition “People Pleaser” to life. This monumental exhibition featured over 100 portraits of community members and multiple installations across various media. Drawing in over 800 attendees, “People Pleaser” was not only a testament to McQuaid’s artistic vision but also a significant cultural event that resonated deeply with the community. Kelcie is currently producing multiple monthly art events with ShangriLa Collective, curating exhibitions, consulting artists and working on her next solo exhibition.
